rare gems and dynamite
The exhibit and reception came together very well. Friends, colleagues and students came for gumbo and goodies, to tour the gallery and to settle on the paintings they wished to take home. I am grateful for all of their compliments. My hope is that the show will lead to gallery representation (hint).
mural studio
These are murals created by students at Bellevue University, where I teach a class called Contemporary Mural Studio. It is an incredibly dynamic learning environment in which groups of up to twenty-one students – most without art foundations – create several murals in one quarter!

jordaens progress
This is a painting’s progress. In particular, it is a rendition of Flemish painter Jacob Jordaen’s 1622 canvas, Allegory of Fertility. You can read a little about him, below.
Salvador Dalí wrote in his 50 Secrets of Magic Craftsmanship (1948), “The true painter must be able to patiently copy while surrounded by raping and upheaval.” The Jordaen’s is my pear. Check out National Geographic’s article, “The End of Plenty”:
obras recientes – recent works
These are paintings done mostly over the past two years, not including the most recent of this spring ‘09. Many of these works will be in the June exhibit at Hot Shops. I’ve been focusing on the human figure for a relatively short while. Though I began teaching Life Drawing as a graduate student in 1995, the figure had not been a dominant presence in my work until two or three years ago. Some of the images are compositions lifted from alchemical engravings of Michael Meier, a series of emblems called Atalanta Fugiens, from the 1600’s. I’ve been working at loosening up on the brushwork and resisting my urge to clean-up the edges.
obras viejas – older works
These are works I created while at the University of New Orleans (BFA ‘93) and the University of Colorado at Boulder.(MFA ‘97)
