Artist Statement

Underlying the themes, imagery, and even the processes, at times, of my paintings is a tension between destructive and creative forces; between chaos and order; between visual complexity and quiet, singular elements.  These coexisting yet contrasting modes seem, to me, to reflect the nature of our existence.

I like to use bold color and expressive brushwork.  The academic side of me leans towards rendering and polished craftsmanship, while my instinct bursts energetically into expressive abstractions.  The range between these impulses defines the form of my paintings.  I mainly focus on figures in narratives, allegories or portraits.  The images are typically existential in spirit, revealing a tense balance between the realms of beauty and despair.
